God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.
(Psalm 46:1-3)
We often say that God won’t bring us through more than we’re able to bear. Those who are mature in their walks with Christ seem able to handle much more chaos, suffering, upset than those of us who are less mature.
“Wow, God has grown them into people who are so strong!” we might say. “They’ve gone through so much in their lives, and yet their faith is vibrant and thriving. Maybe one day I’ll be strong like that, mature like that.”
But now I realize that as we mature it’s not that we’re able to bear more ourselves. It’s that we stop trying to bear anything at all much sooner than we once did.
We immediately cast our burdens on Him, and He does the bearing for us. We can handle more because we’re not handling anything. We’re entrusting it all to the Father, who not only bears our burden but carries us in His arms as well.
